Description

I posted a picture of the Royal Gorge before from the cable car but this view is near the small zoo. it is the highest bridge in the USA and Hanging 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River it was the world's highest suspension bridge. The Royal Gorge is considered a world wonder, and is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas River. Yet it's unlike any other canyon. The width at the canyon bottom is no more than 40 to 50 feet, while the top measures only a few hundred feet wide. In 1929 Canon City authorized the building of the Royal Gorge Bridge, which at 955 feet (291 m) above the river held the record of highest bridge in the world from 1929 to 2003. The bridge forms the kernel of Royal Gorge Park, a theme park owned and run by the city

I'm picking 2 monumental shots tonight, because you do them with real sensitivity. The scale of this thing makes it seem huger than it actually is, but it's huge, and believe me we don't see anything like it here in the upper midwest. Photogenic and monumental views seem most appealing to the camera, but I find, in my 2 and a half short years of photographing, that monumentality is quite difficult to capture, in part because it's so imposing and frontal, from almost any angle you see it. It's far more difficult to capture 'well' than to merely capture it (at least for me). (And I've found it no easier to paint or draw.) This really is about a massive 'face', hitting us directly and covering 3/4 of the frame: But, for such frontal affront, it has immense counterpoint, diversity, line, etc., which you've captured in full detail. (It's very articulate for a wall of rock like that.) And the bridge is almost like this tiny silk, threaded across it. Your composition brings out its utter contrast to the mass of the gorge. (I view everything full size, but this one is a must.) And the river, to the left, seems like an afterthought, until one realizes what a plunge it is to look down there. Lots of bigness here, lots of plunge and sheerness and visual assault. And the bridge is like delicate lace strewn across its top, to remind the gorge to lighten up a little...I can't imagine where you were standing---it gives me a bit of a tremor to think about it, lol, but you sure got a fine shot in the process. Looming and very articulate shot.

Impressive! It never ceases to amaze me what men can do with their intelligence and tenacity. This bridge is an excellent example of what I say. I can not believe that something so long do not need one or two columns to hold it in the center. One would think that a heavy vehicle would bend it down.
