Description

I'm losing my connection for the night, so I decided to throw this up before I'm sent into eternal darkness lol. Here's an upload I removed by mistake a while back... It's from the 80's when I did advertising for a living. I have no CLUE what these were for, but they're from the days when people paid me to illustrate by hand: That was a bigger deal, then, than you could imagine. Each drawing probably took a day. Straight pen and ink. You lose your mind with all the lines, esp for an ad where you can't "go free". But man, you really learn! It's a school in itself. The discipline---even for these uneventful bottles---is total. And if you could make the lines 'sing', you were happy. Hope you find them fun!
I'll be back by tomorrow night. Hope you have a fine Friday! Mark

Fine representations of what are possibly bottles of grog, or rum, the favorite of pirates centuries ago, Mark. This is probably how illustrations portrayed them back then. Tons of your time, patience and dexterity went into this labor of love.

Very painful to be cast into 'eternal darkness'. I have serious withdrawal when my internet connection goes bye bye. Those are very cool bottle illustrations. So much detail I can see why they took so long to create. I didn't know you were an ad man. It's a crazy business, for sure. LJ and I had artists on our staff who did freehand illustration. We did a fashion book with hundreds of original drawings - not sure those were the good ole' days. We had a gigantic machine for outputting type and would cut and paste. Desktop publishing changed everything. Ya gotta love digital.:) CC

Very expressive work in these very real life looking bottles. The detail is amazing and so beautifully done but I can imagine it would feel like you weren't able to express your feelings when you were doing work like this.

Mark, these drawings are simply fantastic my friend. The amount of detail is second to none and I'm so glad you decided to share them with this once again. While I greatly admire all of your contributions to the gallery I must say among my favorites are you're drawings. These two are a perfect example of why, as the time and care that went into creating them is obvious.

I am not certain I could cope with that sort of stress anymore. Never worked for a company, but I frequently was asked to produce posters and suchlike for events at school. Thank goodness forLetraset!

ah - nice set dude. Reminds me of my own old days doing Leroy Inking of text, then being told "like to see that in 6 pt not 8 pt" heehee. pen and ink have such a lovely quality in general; these illustrations are a delight, somethings must be kept for the "yeah, i did do that" [shake of head] "ah youth" Just got back from NM, lovely trip and perfect weather; getting ready for the big move to Rio Rancho area - hoot! new inspiration. later buddy

In my early 20s I did a lot of pen and ink drawing; it's very easy to lose yourself in it, and surprising to "come to" and see what you've done. I wish I still had some of mine. Excellent work here, Mark!

OH Yes, not to be free when you must draw, can be quite frustrating. It would simply give me performance anxiety. But I must admit you have done a remarkable work here, dispite your freedom was hold down. I simply LUV your crosshatch work and maybe they wanted it to give it an old fascioned look. From the time before the camera :) A really beautiful piece of art. I remember I have only in three cases been painting for my old work in the custum office. They wanted me to paint their building in three Departments, but after painting three, I stopped. I was simply feeling too pressed. My work in the Museum was totally different. There I was drawing the find totally in my own way. Every day was a joy. :-) Mark I hope your internet connection will come up again in no time...It is really frustrating not having connection to the world.

I can't imagine doing work like that! For one thing, my drawing skills suck, so I try to keep things as loose as possible. If I need something more precise, I'll trace a shape in order to get started. This is mind-blowing stuff! Doing the bottles in cross-hatch like that makes me think of dusty wine cellars. Great stuff!

I hear them singing, though I don't recognize the tune!! What wonderful lines and shadows and shading. You're very good at this, and since you were PAID for the, I guess someone else thought so too. cool stuff!!
