Description

Needs a full size view. Thank you. This image is for my new friend Photosynthesis whose powerful painterly HDR work never fails to inspire me. Do drop by his gallery. Here is his latest http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2339704&user_id=708659&member&np So if you recall we left off in the theatre of Perge and I pointed out the remains of the Roman wall. Well this is the Late Roman Gate in that wall that allowed access into the city. These tourists have just come through the gate and are heading to the theatre district to the left. In the far right background you can see the Agora, which I used to start this series. Through the gate you can just make out the Hellenistic gates, which are actually much larger and imposing. They are way much older than the Roman Gate. This gate was built in the reign of Septimius Servus, somewhere between 193 and 211 CD. These walls and this gate were thus built much later than the stadium. A many centuries long peaceful period was coming to an end and the region was subject to revolts and pirate attacks. Many Roman cities were becoming fortified - you may recall a "Byzantine Gate" from the city of Hierapolis, much further to the west; it was built just a bit later than this one. Perge's Roman wall effectively held off invaders until the mid 7th century when the city was finally over run by a Muslim army. This image was first put into Perfect Effects 3 by onOne. This great program creates all sorts of lighting effects, tonal adjustments and historical effects. I used it primarily to build up contrast and clarity and do some color fixes. It was then run - this program created the vibrant painterly effects. And finally the image was cleaned up in Topaz Denoise. With all that postwork on an original jpeg image there was a lot of noise by the time it was done. Topaz Denoise is my little miracle worker program to fix those problems. (and it works great to clean up the noise that happens in all jpeg photo images) Previous Perge

Great image. I like seeing it in context with the Pergola in background. Well, there is no noise in this image, excellent job on the post work. It is an impressive gate. I need to look up how they built stuff like this way back. Scaffolding and block and tackle I'd guess? Thanks for sharing.

A great shot, Roxy, and as always fascinating historical information. I'm gonna have to make a list and check out some of those apps you listed. I LOVE the look you've given this photo. It reminds me so much of those wonderful old postcards you'd find at the tourist traps back in the late 50s. Just delightful!

An impressive wall and scene - as always Roxy. Love the colors and the sort of lazy, hot but shady afternoon in this one. Presumably the postwork enhanced that quality of the light.

Wow, this looks great ! your work in 3D and PS has always inspired me, but it looks like your post work craftiness has expanded greatly here :) and the nod to Photosynthesis was very enjoyable, I especially liked his 'At the Musee d'Orsay'. thank you. And also, I just wanted to mention that it's very awesome that you take the time to explain techniques and programs that assist your fellow artists. Very good stuff :) gallery looks wonderful !

Roxy - Thanks so much for the dedication & the kind words. I feel badly that I haven't gotten around to actually seeing it until now (though I was traveling all last week). This is beautiful work - I especially like the rich colors, the textured stones on the gate & the shadows. It makes me feel like traveling there to see it in person...
