Description

Depending on which website you go to, this is also known as a Yellow wild iris, Peacock flower, Butterfly flag, Evergreen iris, Spanish iris, Morae bicolor, Fortnight lily, African iris, Afrikaans Uintjie, Poublom. Very closely related to the African iris Dietes iridioides, previously posted. Captured 6/16/12, early AM, at the outer edge of my local Walmart parking lot. The Dietes bicolor flowers are about 60 mm in diameter, flat, light yellow with brown markings and are produced on the ends of much branched flower stalks. The flowers only last for one day, but because so many buds are produced the plant is almost always in bloom from October until January (spring and summer below the equator). The genus Dietes is only found in South Africa and on Lord Howe island between Australia and New Zealand. Dietes bicolor is found naturally in the Bathurst region of the Eastern Cape in South Africa. Source: www.plantzafrica.com/plantcd/dietesbicol.htm Since it was so overcast that morning, considerable postwork went into this effort, especially with the contrast and texture. Adios, thankx for coming by, and for any and all favs and noncritical comments.

I just dug up and got rid of the two I had...they had gotten way too large and provided way too few flowers. Nice capture, Harry.

Gorgeous capture, Harry; it's a long way from South Africa! The six petal formation is lovely here, and your postwork is excellent.

(I tried to get to this upload 3 times, and my browser crashed! But it was just my browser, an overloaded cache...) First, that's quite a list of names! Second, once again your rescuing postwork made this seem like it came right out of the camera this way. And third, it's another of your 'head-on' captures, simple and very beautiful. You do many angles with flowers, of course, but the head-on seems difficult to me, because it would seem to lack the drama and nuance of an angled shot. But your head-on shots have been eloquent and highly poetic, with genuine nuance. A beautiful capture of the almost kaleidoscopic formation of the flower, and your background is just right. (I love the red/black markings.) More fine flower work from you, Harry. Flowers are one of your continually beautiful series, of which this is no exception.

What I'd love to know, is why on earth in all walks of life including naming a flower, do they give things SO many names.. It just make life so difficult.... But that aside, which has nothing do do with you Harry, this is really quite stunner! A real beauty.. And in a Walmart car park you say!.. So, they are good for something after all... ;-) Rob
