Description

Returned last night from my trip to New York. Standing in the middle of the scene of previous devestation and to see the new towers arising around me filled me with admiration for the people of New York, their resolution and determination to provide a fitting memorial is moving and uplifting all at the same time. My first visit to New York was highlighted by the warmth and friendliness of its people, to use a word often heard over the last few days, awesome!!!

Oh wow - I cannot believe the fountain is finished! When I was there in January 2011, they haven't even started on that and the tower was only about 20 stories up... Just wonderful! As you, I admire the spirit of New York and its people!

prior to my one and only visit to the Big Apple, all I heard was that New Yorkers were too busy to give a second for anyone. I personally found out that it was not true superb capture

It's always a privilege to come to your gallery, Alan. Because I'm slow in commenting (and I write too long, lol), my rounds are way slower than most. But whenever I'm here I feel I've re-entered a place of great quality, a high degree of intelligence and discernment, and an aesthetic sense akin to the most delicate wines. I've seen all your NYC entries so far, and they've been marvelous. And I thought, as entering this series, that many of the images I've seen in your gallery have been your signature lush South England countryside shots, from larger sweeping landscapes to more intimate shots of the countryside you so love. But one has to remember that you've also done numerous urban shots, village shots, architectural shots, etc, of equal sensitivity, intimacy and fine-ness of eye. And now, you give us New York City, which seems so completely different from the vistas you've often shown us. And you begin with a wonderful abstract, with wonderful plays angle over angle, texture next to texture, the illusory sight of water on a flat surface being cut off to look like it were cut-glass, and strong shadows. It's a beautiful capture. It could be many fountains, of course, but the fact that it's this memorial makes it a loving closeup of a place for remembrance. And re. the people of NY, yes they can be very friendly (as they are in many American cities). But the myth of the too-busy-to-give-a--that-you're-talkin'-to-me New Yorker isn't false, either: NYC can still be a cold, hard-driven place, in spots. But it's become a lot friendlier over the years, and I'm glad you experienced that, I really am. When I was there, it wasn't uncommon to get a friendly "what the YOU lookin' at" several times a day---said with a smile, of course, but with a goodly smattering of good old NY "I frickin' dare you" spice. The city's changed. And it's a joy to see your impressions of this canyonesque packed place. Besides, an alanwilliams eye in NYC is a terrific prospect to behold. A very sensitive shot.
