Description

Captured back on 10/25/09, at the 8th Annual Wings Wheels Rotors & Expo, held at the beautiful Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) in beautiful Los Alamitos, California. ZOOM for definitive details. Rob's recent posting of his Austrian Air Force C-130 prompted me to go back into my files for my shots of this beautiful behemoth. This one is based at Channel Island Air National Guard Station in California. After all, if Austria, with a population of around 8,220,000, can have an air force, how can California, with a population of around 39,000,000, be left out of the mix? Speaking of the Air National Guard, the markings on the fuselage are a bit confusing. We first have US Air Force in big print, then California Air Guard toward the lower middle, and then on the tail is ANG (Air National Guard). Can't we have just one title encompassing all three? As for the pics themselves, I love those engine spinners and curvaceous propeller blades in #2 and #3. The last foto shows visitors entering the cavernous cargo hold to get a peek at the interior, which looks a lot like the inside of my garage. General Characteristics: Primary Function: Global airlift Contractor: Lockheed-Martin Aeronautics Company Power Plant: C-130E: Four Allison T56-A-7 turboprops; 4,200 prop shaft horsepower C-130H: Four Allison T56-A-15 turboprops; 4,591prop shaft horsepower C-130J: Four Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 turboprops; 4,700 horsepower Length: C-130E/H/J: 97 feet, 9 inches (29.3 meters) C-130J-30: 112 feet, 9 inches (34.69 meters) Height: 38 feet, 10 inches (11. 9 meters) Wingspan: 132 feet, 7 inches (39.7 meters) Source: http://www.af.mil/information/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=92 Google for infinitely more information. Toodles, thankx for the visit, and for any and all favs and noncritical comments.

Nice selection of shots that show just how huge these aircraft are. Just look at those props too!

Excellent series of shots here, Harry; I noticed those massive propeller blades right off too. And from that bottom shot it looks like they waste no space inside, there are things tucked inside things and lining the sides just like everyone's garages! Well done you!

Wow, those propellers are massive. Great series of shots. I love seeing these planes flying over, but have never seen one up close like this. I hope you took a good look inside while you had the chance.

Super photos and excellent collage Harry. Those massive turbo props allows for short runway take offs and landings. Imagine touching down, dumping cargo and taking off - all in a couple of hundred yards and never stopping!

fine dedication, I always mean to go to Rob's gallery; I just have barely kept up with my regulars; but I know he does lots of fine plane shots among many other things...Harry, I know precious little about planes, but you got a full, almost 'modeled' clarity in these, and they stand out beautifully. The propellers, yes, are beautiful, as are your captures of them: There's such fine light on them, and the sweep of the metal around them is very smooth and sweet. Your top shot is also very clear, the tail soars out there in space; and the bottom shot, yes, gives us a glance into everything that fits into them (ala Denise's comment---and I also like Dana's comment, on how these planes do their business without even stopping; I learned something else here). My closets look like that interior: Uou can excuse it if it's a garage, if it's a closet, you got problems. Anyway, I love the light, the smoothness, the use of clear skies as backdrops, and your angles; and beautiful work on the propellers. Nice to see this, I think it's been a while since you've posted planes... (I'm getting over a stomach flu, so today's visits will be just your two most recents; I'll save my usual catching-up for when I'm a little stronger...)
