Description

This is the male Blue-winged Kookaburra (Dacelo leachii) native to Northern Australia and Southern New Guinea. I wish I could say that I photographed this beauty in his natural habitat but sadly I took this image at the Umgeni Bird Park in Durban last year July. I just love these birds. Some wikipedia info: They are large to very large, with a total length of 28 - 42 cm (11 - 17 in). Kookaburras are carnivorous. They will eat lizards, snakes, insects, mice, other small birds, and raw meat. Kookaburras are best known for their unmistakable call, which sounds uncannily like loud, echoing human laughter - good-natured, but rather hysterical. Thanks for popping in and for your very valued comments and favs on my last upload "Namib Desert and Clouds". thumb_2341518.jpghref> Carin xx

Lovely Carin. I love getting woken up by the Kookaburras! They really are the laughing clowns of the sky , and as you said, EXCELLENT snake catchers.

What a handsome guy! Phantastic clarity, color, patterns and texture in this glorious foto of the big bird, which creates one of my favorite all time jungle calls, Dierbaar. When I read the title, I thought no way is that native to South Africa. Incidentally, I find it rather amusing when watching a jungle movie, that no matter where it's supposed to be, Africa, South America, Central America, Burma, whereever, that they use the Kookaburra laughter for effect.

Gorgeous wings! :) It reminds me of the song we learned as children about the kookaburra in the gum tree. Beautiful image!

That is really close to home ... I have got a couple coming to visit me regularly, making a hell of a racket when they are fighting with other birds over their territory. They are not shy at all - if the door is open, one of them just pops in, to see what I am cooking. He is very fond of bacon strips, especially when I dangle it in front of him, he is probably thinking that it could be a snake? Your close-up is just beautiful, Carin BB

Where I lived we just took those for granted but they are a beautiful bird. They are more Western than northern in Oz and these ones don't laugh like the less pretty Eastern ones do.
