Description

Newspaper Rock State Historical Monument is in eastern Utah, located to the east of Canyonlands National Park on highway 211. It is 12 miles (19km) west from US 191 and 30 miles (48km) east from the park. The 200 square foot (19 square metre) rock is a part of the vertical Wingate sandstone cliffs that enclose the upper end of Indian Creek Canyon, and is covered by hundreds of ancient Indian petroglyphs. The petroglyphs have a mixture of human, animal, material and abstract forms, and to date no-one has been able to fully interpret their meaning. There are over 650 rock art designs and the first carvings at the newspaper Rock site were made around 2,000 years ago, left by people from the Archaic, Anasazi, Fremont, Navajo, Anglo, and Pueblo cultures. These petroglyphs allow a glimpse of the life and world of the people who farmed the Puerco River Valley 650 to 2,000 years ago (Wikipedia). This picture was taken in September 1993 and later scanned, Sig...

Great capture Sig, don't try and interpret this as it is the kids drawing on the wall again. Mum and dad got feed up with them moaning there's nothing to do, while they were out farming, and they were told go draw on a wall or cliff face. LOL.

LOL! I know that some of the "graffiti," etc. remarks above were made in jest, but...who knows? Maybe the idle scribbles of some ancient doodlers is exactly what this is. You know, like those rocks and bridges and anything else solidly anchored in place on which teenagers like to write the letters of their high school and their graduation year, or tell the world who they love. No reason to think things were fundamentally different at any other age of history. Anyway, great shot and text, Sig! I always appreciate your posts! RUNNING BEAR + LITTLE WHITE DOVE TRUE LOVE

I'm with the graffiti bunch. I think it was a place that was famous for all the stuff people had carved there, and when an artist (or someone with a favorite doodle) passed by, they added their own thing. If I'd been there, you would see a spider in a top hat with a bow tie, perhaps, or a ladybug. Andrea would have drawn some of those feet, I'm sure, or one of her 'stares.' What a fun thing to think about!

Who's to know? Maybe the name they've given it, is actually what it was! There is a thought.. But this is fascinating, so very old! A great shot, well posted.. Rob
