Description

Bill this is the P-40 you identified in the four-ship on my recent upload. It is the Curtiss-Wright P-40 Warhawk 'The Jackie C' belonging to 'American Airpower Museum', Farmingdale, New York. General Information: The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was an American single-engine, single seat, all-metal fighter and ground attack aircraft that first flew in 1938. By November 1944, when production of the P-40 ceased, 13,738 had been built, all at Curtiss-Wright Corporation's main production facilities at Buffalo, New York (Unit cost US$ 44,892 in 1944). P-40s first saw combat with the British Commonwealth squadrons of the Desert Air Force in the Middle East and North African campaigns, during June 1941. The Royal Air Force's No. 112 Squadron was among the first to operate Tomahawks (British designation), in North Africa, and the unit was the first Allied military aviation unit to feature the 'shark mouth' logo, copying similar markings on some Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 110 twin-engine fighters. The P-40's lack of a two-stage supercharger made it inferior to Luftwaffe fighters such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 or the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in high-altitude combat and it was rarely used in operations in Northwest Europe. between 1941 and 1944, however, the P-40 played a critical role with Allied air forces in three major theaters: North Africa, the Southwest Pacific and China. it also had a significant role in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Alaska and Italy (Wikipedia). The P-40 was best known for its service with the Claire Chennault American Volonteer Group, 'The Flying Tigers'. General Characteristics: Crew: One Length: 31.67-ft (9.66m) Wingspan: 37.33-ft (11.38m) Height: 12.33-ft (3.76m) Wing Area: 235.94 ft square (21.92 m square) Empty Weight: 6,350-lb (2,880kg) Loaded Weight: 8,280-lb (3,760kg) Max Takeoff Weight: 8,810-lb (4,000kg) Power Plant: 1 x Allison V-1710-39 liquid-cooled V12 engine, 1,150hp,(858kW) Performance: Maximum Speed: 360mph (310kn, 580km/h) Cruise Speed: 270 mph (235kn, 435km/h) Range: 650 mi (510 nmi, 1,100km) Service ceiling: 29,000-ft (8,800m) Rate of Climb: 2,100 ft/min (11m/s) Guns: 6 x .50-in (12.7mm) M2 Browning machine guns with 150-200 rounds per gun Bombs: 250-1,000-lb (110-450kg) bombs to a total of 2,000-lb (907kg) on three hardpoints (one under fuselage and two underwing). This picture was taken at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum's 22nd Anniversary World War II Weekend, 'A Gathering of Warbirds' on 1 June 2012, Sig...

Thanks Sig for the dedi and the excellent photo. The P-40 has always been one of my favorite WWII fighters...think it may have been the first model airplane I built way back when:) I see it came in from Long Island...my birthplace and an early cradle of aviation. Charles Lindburgh began his famous flight across the Atlantic from Roosevelt Field not far from where this P-40 now calls home.
