Description

Most people that go to an airshow want to see the 'interesting' things, i.e. the loud, big, and fast aircraft. Walking to the taxiway to watch flight operations I walked by a double row of old biplanes, either yellow or blue in color. I noticed that some had different engines than others, and that there were other minor variations between the different aircraft. Somehow I started thinking of Tara and how she manages to come up with pictures I would never think of taking. When I go to an airshow I want pictures of the 'hot' aircraft, just like most other guys. But I decided to take a picture of the 'Front End' of this aircraft, which is a Stearman Model 75. The next thing I thought 'How would Tara take this picture?' Well, Tara would stick her camera right up there and snap the picture, so that is what I did. Then I noticed that this particular aircraft had a wooden prop whereas the one next to it had a metal prop with a shiny center hub. So I asked the guys sitting around (presumably the owners), and they explained to me what the difference was and why. I figured I would look that up once I get home. General information: The Stearman (Boeing Model 75) is a biplane used as a military trainer aircraft, of which at least 8,584 were built in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. Stearman Aircraft became a subsidiary of Boeing in 1934. Widely known as the 'Stearman', 'Boeing Stearman' or 'Kaydet', it served as a primary trainer for the USAAF, the USN (as the NS & N2S), and with the RCAF as the 'Kaydet' throughout World War II. At the end of the war, thousands of surpus aircraft were sold on the civil market. In the immediate post-war years they became popular as crop dusters, sports planes, and for aerobatic and wing walking use in airshows (Wikipedia). Throughout the production period modifications were made, using different engines (some of them 9-cylinder radials rather than this 7-cylinder radial), different props etc. Tara, I hope you like this. This picture was taken on 2 June 2012, Sig...

I love this!! I love it that you went to an air show and wondered what I would shoot and how I would shoot it, and that you then DID that! I also love it that even though this is a "Tara" shot, it's still very much a "Sig" shot. I would have taken this and then cropped out everything that wasn't the engine or something. You went close in and still got all those fascinating "Sig" details that you do so well. Look at all the horizontals. Wings, props, and elevators going back into forever. Verticals to offset all that length. Red over here and again over there. One guy with a backpack next to another guy with a backpack. People on each edge, both walking away, like bookends. That beautiful radial engine front and center, and half another one just like it in the back, perfectly lined up and perfectly composed. I know you'll say, "Tara! I never saw all those things until you pointed them out!" But you know, it can't be a coincidence. You do this so often! So much going on, and you click the shutter at exactly the right place and the right second and come up with these amazing images. (Do you remember that street scene from Rio, or wherever you were? Holy cow! I still remember that picture like it was yesterday. You leave an impression, my friend!) You probably couldn't do this if you TRIED, but you do it naturally, without thought. What a great shot! Thank you so much!

Great shot, info, and dedication! I like the military precision of the lines of the prop, wings, and horizontal stabilizer! Like a soldier at attention. :)
