Description

Timarcha tenebricosa 23mm long. One of the largest of the Leaf beetles in the UK. It is flightless and in this pic it is on one of the preferred foodplants, Goosegrass, Cleavers or, to give it the Dorset name, Sticky Willie. It gets the common name from the habit of exhuding blood from the mouth when alarmed which scares birds. We saw this on the pathway to Corfe Castle in the rain, on a very British Summer Outing!

Hehe.. the drops are almost as big as the beetle itselfs. Not a beetle I am familiar with.. never seen in Holland anyway.

Fantastic capture of this big black beetle. Great timing Andrea, the rain drops on it's back look awesome. Looks like it has some of the plant in it's mouth. Thanks for sharing the wonderful information.

If you're breeding these I'll have a batch please - my garden is riddled with sticky willie. Apparently you can cook it and eat it.... I like foraging but confess I don't fancy this.

What a wonderful photograph! I battle with Goosegrass sometimes; other times I let it be the food of love.

Top notch clarity and contrast in this pic of the pugnacious beetle, Andrea, especially with the raindrops atop its bod.

I understand. Things that exude blood from their mouth would tend to scare me too!

The name is so very intriguing; I do suppose, that we will never be able to experience and see this syndrome of the 'bloody nose/mouth' - unless ... and those water droplets on his back are just like magic, an extra load for him? BB
