Description

I was attending an outdoor car show last month with my friend & neighbor Kate (she's the one in the foreground with a green tee shirt) when we came across this unique entry. This excerpt from an article in the Medford Mail Tribune describes it well: "Randy Grubb, 50, sat in the shade with a satisfied grin on his face as hundreds of curious onlookers approached his latest art piece. 'The Decoliner' is Grubb's fifth custom ride crafted at his Grants Pass art studio/auto work shop. 'I view myself as an automotive artist,' he said. 'These are sculptures you get to drive.' 'The Decoliner' is a double-decker motor home that features a teak wood sky bridge, cork flooring, a stove, a freezer wrapped in a silver and teal green aluminum body. It sits on a 1973 GMC motor home chassis and is powered by a strong Oldsmobile 455 motor. The chassis and motor are the only salvage pieces, Grubb said. 'Everything else, I make myself,' he said. 'I don't just cut up other cars and make a new one. I start with clean sheets of paper.' The kicker is the top deck, which features a steering wheel linked to the cab, making it possible to drive 'The Decoliner' from the sky bridge. The whole thing gives off a retro-futurism vibe, which is what Grubb was going for during the design phase. 'This is the mobile home that Flash Gordon would drive on vacation,' he said." Two works of art here. That van looks incredible, what a concept vehicle. I wonder if it can be legally driven on the highway? Your photograph is especially impressive as the surreal nature of HDR is a perfect match for the subject at hand. I love the incredible gritty detail of all the organics shown here and the marvelous contrast with the smooth reflective metal of the machines.
