Description

Apologies for being away for so long, I could offer a whole host of excuses, but the truth is that I've kind of allowed my life to get over-run by things that seem important but in hindsight look pretty small. On the plus side, last weekend I went to a brand-new "Medieval Festival" in Augusta, Michigan which was a fantastic day and definitely one I will return to if at all possible. (Fixing the A/C in my car unfortunately rated a higher priority this weekend, alas.) While I neglected to bring a camera of my own, a wonderful lady who goes by the charming title of "BlackBottle the Scribe and Teller of Tales" snapped this picture of me in all of my "finery" that pleases me to no end. http://www.facebook.com/pages/BlackBottle-the-Scribe-and-Teller-of-Tales/316505338388774 I'm currently working on a new mask, which is much more complicated than anything I've ever done before, so I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make it all work the way I want. So this hopefully will tide everyone over until the new mask can make its debut. I'm playing the character of "Mictectzuk", a human who has "gone native" with a tribe of goblins and now serves as their witch-doctor and shaman. It was a fun character to play and one I hope to develop a bit more in time. Most of what you see I made myself, the mask is about the only exception. The vest and hat and such are all leather, the hair is a mix of my own, some horse-tail hairs, and various cords added for good measure. The "bones" and "claws" are all fake, a resin cast in molds I made either from antler tips or models I sculpted. The staff is made from a bundle of reeds that grow wild around where I live, wrapped with leather cords, and it sports wood beads I made and wild turkey feathers, a lantern I made myself, and maple seeds. Oh, it also has some horsetail hairs as well. I hope everyone is having a good summer, and once the new costume stuff gets further along I hope to post pictures of that as well.

Cool! I'm not sure "Dandy" is the word I would use.

I want to know this character! Your description is quite intriguing on countless levels, especially since I've recently re-re-re-read one of my favorite stories by James Tiptree Jr. The story in question is "The Milk of Paradise" if you're at all interested. It's an odd tale that first appeared in Harlan Ellison's anthology Again, Dangerous Visions. It has appeared--as well--in various Tiptree-dedicated anthologies. Anyway, I thought of that story, as it's about a human who went native, so to speak, among a race of aliens who were decidedly non-anthropomorphic in shape. The character's clothing choices marked his preference to alien things, rather than the human things everyone told him he should appreciate. And so this all brings me to this image. The idea of a human "going native" among goblins makes perfect sense and is full of anthropological (xenological?) interest, and to top it off, the costume modeled here is quite a detailed and exquisite piece of workmanship. I love the details, the earthy "rawness" of the image and the way in which all of the marvelous textures were captured and are presented here. This is an amazing work, and it makes me think of masks and their purposes. Is Mictectzuk's mask his own adaptation to Goblin culture, or does it serve some other symbolic purpose, perhaps something shamanistic? One can only wonder, guess, and extrapolate, and no matter what the answer might be, I'm sure that more questions might be raised, and that's what I love about stuff like this. I really like this image. Your work (as always) is top-notch stunning.

In total agreement with Chipka, Jocko500, RodS and others~ Amazing! So glad your (new?) friend captured your image!!! This is definitely a story you need to write down in at least short story form and send to a publisher! Love it!!! And you definitely have the Shaman look down! (Shamans and Goblins? Been playing WoW? Some of my alter-egos are goblins but never made a Shammy yet~) I wish Rendo had a "like" button similar to Facebook wherein we could not only click agreement on a posting but also click to be able to follow the comments on a posting. Like most, I don't often go back to a posting to see what people have later commented...mostly cause I can't recall where I want to see! Fantastic work on your costume and character, you are full of creativity!!! Maybe one day you will have your own booth and travel with the Renaissance Faire~ I think it would be an awesome fit!

I'm always impressed by your craftmanship on your costumes. This one certainly makes one sit up and take notice. Think I'd be a bit leery of this guy, though. I expect his mask is an aspect of his shamanistic rituals, symbol of his power as a shaman, or an attempt to look like the goblins--or perhaps all three! Cool summer? I'm afraid not! When it gets down to a cool 98 degrees F. around here, one considers putting on a sweater! Heh!
