Description
A few years back, I had the opportunity to visit Abbey Mills Pumping Station.
It is part of the sewage system designed and built by Joseph William Bazalgette in response to the "Great Stink" of 1858.
The embankments on the North and South banks of the Thames, and the large sewage works at Crossness, serving South London, and Beckton serving North London, are all part of Bazalgette's major achievement.
This is a view of one the tunnels flowing into the pumping station - not an everyday sight (unless you work for Thames water).
The tunnels stretch off into darkness and go for miles. I would have liked to spend more time down there exploring but, alas, we had to go back above ground for the tour of the pumping station proper.
