Description
My current work in progress is to build the space station from the film 2001. In this scene the Orion shuttle is approaching with the Earth behind it, (which is providing the soft faint bluish light)
Kubrick originally wanted the Orion to just fit into the docking bay, but later changed his mind, to make the station look bigger. This one is done to the original scale.
It's very dependant on the brightness of your monitor, so sorry if it's to dark or bright to work well for you!
I still need to add more details to the central hub, but you can't see that well from this angle. :-)

Extraordinary work, Nick! As a lifelong admirer of the brilliant work put into 2001 (I saw it in original release!) i've got to say this is this is the best rendition of space station 5 that has ever been digitally modeled. Amazing craftsmanship!

Thanks for all the feedback. I was surprised at how weak many CGI models were - in particular the part-built stuff at the ends of the arms, where they are all different. (I have not tried the exact arrangement, but its close!) There's some very odd/cleaver stuff done with the lighting in the film too. I spent a lot of time carefully examining screen grabs from the HD film, to get the look and feel of the details right. Expect more images when I finish this thing! :-)

Wonderfully done. This has always been my favorite scene in the entire film! The motion with the music. So powerful!
