Description

This is a Galapagos type tortoise. They are the largest living species of tortoise and 10th heaviest living reptile, reaching weights of over 880 pounds (400 kg) and lengths of over 5.9 feet (1.8 meters). With life spans in the wild of over 100 years, it is one of the longest lived vertebrates. A captive individual can live up to 170 years. Info from Wikipedia. This photo is so old that I do not remember where or when it was taken. The title is because this adult tortoise seemed to be looking for her baby and as you can see the younger tortoise was right behind her. It made me smile. Zoom does work. Sorry that I have not been around much and I am behind in comments. Life has been getting in the way of my life these days. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Cute shot. I'm glad humans don't move as slow as these tortoises.....but maybe that's why they live so long.

Wait a minute....isn't that the baby right behind the adult turtle? Its anguish would be allayed if it only turned around. That said, a fine foto from the past, and excellent information on the species, Dana.

great pov, Dana. They are extremely heavy. My brother has two that are over 50 years old now and besides being very destructive, they do not like to be told where they can and can't go. Moving them is no easy task.Imagine how strong those short, stubby legs are to lift their bulk and walk. No wonder they are slow.

Simply amazing these 'old-timers' - but always fascinating, there is something to be said about their age and awkwardness or so it appears to us ... the only 'Dinosaurs' still around, same as the crusty old Croc's, BB (time is precious to most of us, Dana - so do not worry too much, I do feel guilty myself, occasionally of the same!)

I like tortoises very much. I kept a family of a dozen Greek ones for forty years, and they now live with a friend in Dorset who devotes her time to these creatures.

Nice one! She'll probably be around long after us! I guess the message for longevity is to walk slowly and have very thick skin!
