Description
Ferragosto is an Italian holiday celebrated on August 15. Originally, it was related to the Consualia, an ancient Roman celebration of the middle of the summer and the end of the hard labour in the fields. The present Italian name of the holiday derives from its original Latin name, Feriae Augusti ("Festivals [Holidays] of the Emperor Augustus")established in 18 BC for political propaganda after a long and bloody civil war. The Catholic Church celebrates this date to commemorate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. The holiday often coincides with peak activity of the Perseid meteor shower, which may be one of the reasons which prompted the archaic priests to choose this date.
In the past it was common that businesses closed, and the entire month of August was taken as a holiday and leisure time in Italy. In present days, Ferragosto is mainly a short holiday (for the ones who are not on longer holiday) when most of Italians take brief vacations at the beach.Once staying in town meant having serious problems to find a supermarket open and buy something to eat. It was like living in a day-after town without the bomb!But with the current crisis many people have stayed in town and many shops are open today.
