Description
The sàndolo is the most commonly used boat of the Venetian lagoon. It varies from 5 to 9 m in length, has flat sides, a straight bow stem inclined forwards with a straight-cut stern.
The many variations of this boat are to adapt it to many uses: fishing (sàndolo a la ciosòta, sàndolo buranélo, sàndolo sampieròto - the names come from the different parts of the lagoon), for recreation and regattas (mascaròta, pupparìn), hunting, carrying passengers, and so on. All the names are in the Venetian language. Here you can see a S'ciopòn on the river Bacchiglione, near my house, belonging to a member of a local association supporting the tradition of Venetian rowing and boats. In the background the Arena Park; the photo was taken some days before the previous one I posted.
The Sàndolo da s'ciopo or S'ciopòn is about 5.25 m long, 1 m wide and 30 cm high.
It was used by the inhabitants of the estuary of the nearby Brenta river to hunt ducks using a technique called 'col s'ciopòn' (with the big musket)in the 15th century. The hunter followed the game around the lagoons in this light boat rowing with two crossed oars, threw bait from the sàndolo and using a small oar called a pénola (feather) or palina (small spade) he closed in on the ducks, shooting them with a large (3 m-long) type of musket or s'ciopo, from which the boat gets its name. The s'ciopo (pr. tschòpo) is the musket, the s'ciopòn (tschopòn) is the big musket.
Thanks for your kind comments.

Wonderful picture and interesting history. When firing the musket one must be careful not to capsize the boat!
