Description
This is was an installation by the renowned Chinese contemporary artist - Ai Weiwei, seen at the Tate Modern in 2010. Shown here is the turbine hall of the Tate Modern of which 10 Tonnes of handmade and hand painted porcelain Sunflower seeds covered the floor.
I have alot of respect for this artist, not only are his works beautifully sculpted and crafted but its his messages behind his art that serves as his expression - in this case political, which has courted controversy.
What this pano does not convey is the immense size and volume of the hall itself which would otherwise indicate the amount of time and effort to handmake the sunflower seeds themselves. Ironically, when this installation was first opened the public could actually walk on the sunflower seeds. However, due to health and safety fears this was stopped due to the creation of dust. I visited after this was imposed so I saw this from behind a barrier :(.
Please do look up more on this artist. I feel alot of imagery we see is purely for 'eye-candy' and 'Shock value', but there are those whose only way to express ones opinion and be heard is through thier art.

I have been there and never had the fortune of finding anything on display in the turbine hall. More reason to keep going back. As you say, it does not do justice to the size of the hall. I like the B&W of your photograph. Very well done. Clive
