Description

A still life of a single flower embraced by the warm glow of two candles. This is my second still life artwork, the first being Orchid Zen, and it was created for another site's Monthly Challenge. For August, the theme was Still Life and that's why this is a still life. This was my first of two entries to the challenge. (I didn't win but it was fun none the less.) My first attempt at this scene concept didn't turn out too well. Luckily, I had the good sense to ask my dad (a great traditional artist IMHO) for his advice. I followed his advice and came up with the scene you now see here. Mainly I simplified the background, turned it into a night scene, moved some elements around slightly, and a few other little yet important things. I'm quite happy with and proud of the materials I created for the vase's glass and water. The light setup is pretty good too, if I do say so myself. I created the depth of field effect, darkened the background, and enhanced the detail in post-work using Photoshop, lots of layers, and a couple filters.

Sweet! Your textures just pop, and placement of props & backgrounds all on the money, also too your lighting is excellent. And where did you find that vase?

Gorgeous, you're doing great with these still lifes... Ive tried to do a few in traditional painting and they're really much trickier than they seem composition-wise.. so i can totally appreciate that.

I loved this over at the other site, and if I'd been running the show and could have given out two firsts and no third, I would have given this one of the firsts. It's just so lovely and so very classic.
