Description
The Ballad of Greek-Australian Sam
Let me tell you all the story
of Greek-Australian Sam
Some say he's a modest chap,
some think he's a ham
He drives a great big rusty hulk
people call the Ark
And he's the best damn driver
in the Masai Mara park
He took sixteen mzungus
on a wild safari trek
First to Samburu Game Reserve
we arrived near total wrecks
Next to peaceful Nakuru
then on to the Mara plain,
where we saw things we'd never seen
and never shall again
He drove us over bumpy roads,
through dust and mud and rain
Took us out to see the sights
and brought us back again
If I'm ever back in Kenya
and I'm safari bound,
Greek-Australian Sam's the man
I'll ask to show me 'round
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sam was the son of Greek immigrants from the wild island of Tasmania. He was friendly and funny but when it came to his responsibilties, especially our safety, he was the complete professional. Most of our lunches were taken inside the parks as you have seen in a previous post. In Masai Mara, Sam and our tracker Jonathan would take turns watching for anything that might want to make lunch out of us.
The Ballad of Greek-Australian Sam is another bit of doggerel I wrote in my off time. When I sang it to him at camp one night he teased me, asking if I had managed to see any animals on our trip. But a year later the travel agent that booked my safari contacted me. He had just returned from a trip to Kenya and met Sam. It seems Sam was still singing the song.
Great 'pome', as my mother used to call the doggerel she wrote. And what a superb photo: together with your description we know all about this terrific guy!
He must be outstanding, since there's been a song written about him! :) I bet he loved it. It's a lovely piece of "doggerel," and a fun story. Nice work!
It occurred to me, that Sam could be a close relative to Errol Flynn, also a former 'Taswegian' - same tough breed ;) BB I just had to google 'doggerel' as it was an unfamiliar term to me: (Doggerel is a derogatory term for verse considered of little literary value) aha - now I know - but yours is quite cute!
