Description
A Henschel Hs-126 observation plane flies over the front lines somewhere in North Africa. Below, supplies of ammunition, bread, and chocolate are being delivered to the troops. Beyond, the ground troops, a destroyed American tank looms, indicating that recent, brutal fighting took place. This time, the Germans overran the inexperienced American troops. For a time, the Afrika Corps will triumph over the Allies, but the tide of battle will eventually turn and the German army will be pushed out of Africa.
For now, though, that is in the future. These soldiers are content to enjoy a brief respite from the fighting.
It is easy to paint all Germans as bad guys, but the truth is that many if not most of the ordinary soldiers where just ordinary people trying to do their duty for their country. Terrible things were done on both sides. I'm not trying to revise history here. Enough people are busy doing that these days--people who were not even alive when these events happened. They think they know how it was; they do not. I was alive and a very young person when these events happened--and even I do not know the whole of it. Men and women on both sides went off to war--some to suffer and die, others to survive and suffer the rest of their lives for what they did or had done to them. Among the survivors were a number of my immediate family. It is only in the last few years of their lives that they really shared much of their experience.
What has struck me the most about these last surviving veterans of WWII is that they seem to have more in common with their former enemies than they do with the rest of us. They understand their former enemies because they both went through the same experiences--some too horrible to share with anybody but someone who has undergone the same things. It is a beautiful thing to see old adversaries embrace each other as comrades.

How right you are. We are both old enought to have met veterans from both theatres and both sides and to have had the privledge to hear their stories. I guess I can say is that a soldier is universally a patriot for their country and known way of life.

Well said,Jeremy Fact is my grandfather did some of his duty in Africa. He was mechanic and gunner in a JU 52...and no joke.... i once asked him how it was in combat..shooting at other planes he said i tried not to hit anyone.... he was a hunter as well...when he got old...he justed aimend and let the deer run away. Any war teaches us all a lesson, unfortunately, some of us are resistant to learning. Greets from Germany Manfred
