Description
aka altostratus clouds.
Captured 9/3/12, very early AM, looking east, about a half mile from my place.
A must ZOOM.
Top photo the original, middle pic a black & white with green filter, bottom a black & white with red filter.
A fun departure from my normal serious stuff.
Since it was a narrow band of clouds, I snapped it in 16:9 aspect ratio. Glad I caught this particular monsoonal mass when I did, because that was about it for the day. It was all blue sky after it drifted off to the northeast.
-----------------------
The bases of altocumulus clouds typically appear between 6,500 to 20,000 feet (2,000 to 6,000 meters). Because of their lower altitudes, they are composed primarily of water droplets, however, they can also consist of ice crystals when temperatures are cold enough.
This type usually forms by convection in an unstable layer aloft, which may result from the gradual lifting of air in advance of a cold front. The presence of altocumulus clouds on a warm and humid summer morning is commonly followed by thunderstorms later in the day.

A great spread of clouds, Harry, with excellent alternatives; I like that last one a lot, I guess because it's so dramatic. Wonderful work all around!
