Alerte magmatique - Magmatic alert FUJI-YAMA La pression du magma s'élève ! Des géophysiciens japonais affirment que, suite au séisme du 11 mars 2011, la chambre magmatique sous le mont Fuji a vu sa pression grimper sous l'effet de contraintes tectoniques nouvelles. De quoi déclencher une éruption volcanique... Mais, pour autant, aucun signe ne se manifeste actuellement. Le 11 mars 2011, un séisme de magnitude 9 au large du Japon provoquait quelques heures plus tard un terrible tsunami. D’après un groupe de chercheurs du National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention japonais, les mouvements tectoniques induits dans la région du mont Fuji ont fait monter la pression s’exerçant sur la chambre magmatique de ce stratovolcan emblématique du pays du Soleil levant. Situé au centre de l’île de Honshu près de la côte orientale, il est la plus haute montagne du Japon avec ses 3.776 m. Manifestation du volcanisme de subduction, le mont Fuji est parsemé de cônes de cendres caractéristiques d'éruptions de type stromboliennes. D’après les géophysiciens, la pression sur les parois de la chambre magmatique alimentant les éruptions du mont Fuji serait désormais de 1,6 mégapascal soit 15,8 kilogrammes par centimètre carré. Cette pression est énorme : c’est 16 fois la valeur seuil reconnue comme permettant à une éruption volcanique de se produire. Certes, le mont Fuji ne montre aucun signe d’une reprise de son activité d’émissions de lave et, de plus, la quantité de magma présent dans la chambre ne semble bien pas suffisante pour que se déclenche un tel événement. Toutefois, sa dernière éruption, en décembre 1707, 49 jours après un séisme majeur, semble bel et bien avoir résulté d’une augmentation similaire des contraintes tectoniques sur sa chambre magmatique. La prudence s’impose donc. Le mont Fuji, bardé de dizaines de sismomètres et de capteurs GPS, est surveillé 24 h sur 24. En 2004, le gouvernement japonais a estimé qu'une éruption de ce volcan affecterait plus de 700.000 personnes, y compris dans la région de Tokyo.
