Description
We've just spent a week in South Tyrol, the mostly German-speaking Italian province at the border with Austria. Fortunately the weather was fine and the temperature cool. We enjoyed ourselves visiting around, but a week's vacation is too short, alas!
The Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum),is one of the best-known European mountain flowers, belongs to the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The name comes from German edel (noble) and weiss (white). The scientific name, Leontopodium means "lion's paw",from the Greek leon(lion)and podion (small foot). It has been used traditionally in folk medicine as a remedy against abdominal and respiratory diseases. The edelwiss, called stella alpina (Alpine star) in Italian, is protected by very strict rules in Italy.
Thanks for your kind comments.

a lovely photo! "lion's paw" is a perfect name for this unique flower and a wonderful zoom for detail of the flower and fly!

These Edelweiss are so furry in feel, which makes perfect sense, to call them: 'lion's paw' as the Greeks do ... BB
