Description
Locomotive 484 arrives to replace 488, which has a burned out bearing on the tender.
488 and the train have been driven to just ahead of a short siding. 484 pulled up behind the train and was switched to the siding.
488 backed the train down, set the cars' brakes, uncoupled from the cars and pulled ahead.
484 pulled out of the siding, backed down, and coupled with the cars.
It is at this point the picture was taken. 488 is switching to the siding and will be backed to Antonito, CO by the yard crew as the train continues to Chama, NM.
Needless to say, the passengers were pleased watching the procedure.
It's a personal choice if the show compensated for the 90 minute delay. It meant that we had lunch at 3:00, but on the way down slope to Chama the sun was lower and the light was much more dramatic. It meant that much of the bus ride from Chama to Antonito was after dark and it was pitch black when we got to the station. We had walked from the motel that morning, so we hoofed it back a quarter mile or more with no street lights, or flash light for that matter. An unforgetable excursion, just not one to take every week!
Incidentally, the range of scenery is marvelous. Plus, we had every kind of weather imaginable along the route; sunny, cloudy, rain, snow, even hail for about 30 seconds.
Kudos to the Cumbres & Toltec for only 90 minutes stop to exchange the damaged equipment. The next morning, 488 was back at work.
