Description
Geraniums are ubiquitous in South Tirol as well as all over our mountains. They are often in combinations of red and pink and make balconies and window-sills merrier. Here the red of the geraniums have a counterpoint in the yellow of the Golden Delicious. The most interesting thing about modern apple growing is that the apple trees are nowhere to be seen. Apples, instead, are grown as grapes, with very thin, almost non-existent boughs and trunks. They are made of mostly leaves and fruits, and are tied to poles connected by wires for support. The apple trees have been modified to allow an easier harvesting. They are in rows and small tractors go along the lanes between them, while farmhands pick the fruits and put it in the trailer. This photo was taken in Cermes, a hamlet four kms from Meran.

a lovely scene and colorful photo. interesting information because all of our apples grow on trees and we can go and pick our own - and pay on the way out!

Geraniums are the universal flower, I think; rather like people, dogs, and cats, they're everywhere, and if there's a balcony or a patio, there are probably geraniums on it or bordering it! Funny how that works. This is a gorgeous red, green, and golden shot! It appeals to something atavistic in me: the remnant of the old pagan or something. And the information about the apples is really intriguing for me. I suspect the same might be done in parts of the USA, but I've only ever seen full sized trees in orchards here. I wonder how these were modified? Was it in the manner of bonsai, or was there gene-tweaking involved? I'll have to do a bit of research!
