Description

If the flat, faux-peapods of annual honesty were books, then by the time that I made this photograph, only their center pages remained. I’d seen the mysterious flutter of seed-pod husks during the week before I took this photograph, and upon my return to Corey’s the following week, we ambled around the neighborhood in the dark-night hours, talking and drinking something sweet, bubbly, and caffeinated. I was on a mission. I wanted to find more seed pods. I wanted to do something…um…onion-like with them. What I found, however, were mere whispers and remnants of what I’d seen the week before. I wasn’t disappointed, but I didn’t feel the stirrings of characters in the back of my mind: no one like Hej, the onion-worshipper, stepped forward and began to recite passages of their story. Ah, but there are honesty stories. They’ll be coming soon. Hej has nothing to do with them, nor does anyone else from his world. As far as I know…but honesty (of the botanical variety) does play an important narrative role. As with previous shots of this sort, the seed-pod remnants (still attached to their stalk) were arranged before a sheet of paper with normal daylight shining behind it. I was without colored LED flashlight lighters, and so there are no odd and surprising color effects, as I’d achieved with my onionskin series. Maybe this is fitting, in a way. Onionskins and honesty-pods are different things, after all, and require different treatments, and so without onion-enhancing light, I photographed the husks of honesty seeds, surprised (in all honesty) by the wealth of colors that actually came out of what appeared to be little more than translucent, white seed-pod-partitions. I rather like that. Perhaps, unlike onionskins, honesty responds best to unadulterated daylight. Or maybe not… …further research is necessary, but until then, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope that you’re all having a great week.

Aren't they lovely? The seed pods are so unusual, they remind me of capiz shells. This is a good time of year to find interesting seeds and leaves; I have a lot of insect chewed leaves that look like delicate brown lace--I wish I had your skill at photographing them!

A very simple & elegant image, which can be more elusive & difficult to achieve than a complex one...

Pure light is about as honest as it gets. But like honesty, colored lights versus white light are just various forms of the truth. My honest opinion, my truth-telling, might vary from day to day, no version being less true than another. The story of these plants, in my mind, generally includes a priest for some reason. A temple. Offerings. Not your run-of-the-mill religious business, but something Chip-like with hidden depths and slowly revealed meaning. You know how these associations happen in the mind ... mine might be as far from your truth as it gets! LOL! :)

We thought that these onionskins were Japanese money when we were kids. Brings back a great childhood memory my friend!
