Description

If humans ever attempt to colonize other worlds, or at least other environments not entirely recognizable to contemporary humans, it might be wise to study the ways of Phaenicia sericata, the common green bottle fly. Though native to the Southern Hemisphere, these little critters have colonized nearly the entire planet. This particular breed of fly has been classified as coastal and one with a distinct preference for moist, warm environments. The presence of such flies in Chicago just goes to show how little we know when it actually comes to things like the colonial procedures of such insects. It’s quite clear that these rather showy, insectoid people don’t really care where they live: just as long as they have nice things to feed on in their distinct…um…non-Emily Post manner. (Digesting one’s food outside of the body is one of those dubious gifts Nature has bestowed upon flies. I’m sure it serves a purpose, but so far, the only purpose I’m aware of is an excuse for a rather…um…graphic scene in David Cronnenberg’s version of The Fly.) I saw this fly while attempting to capture wandering vines. I saw this fly, pretending to be a part of the environment of wandering vines. I saw this fly standing perfectly still, and as I am quite fond of insects, especially well-dressed insects, I simply had to take a photo. This is the result. There are no intriguing, creeping vines, but there’s a fly, dressed somewhat like a gaudy harlequin of sorts. I am amused by the fact that the fly is obscured and decidedly not interested in my photographic efforts. Ah…flies…they have such one track minds. If it’s not stinky, they don’t really care! Ah, but they’re cute (at least to me) and so this allows them to get away with nearly anything that they want. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great week.

Great capture! I love the red eyes of the fly, also like texture of leaves. Green flies are the only kind of fly I like.

For someone who wants to be left alone, he certainly is a showy fellow. I really like how the light makes the leaves shine.

Are these vines slowly twirling about a mysterious rusty white pickup truck? Oh, that's another post isn't it;-) Love the way you anthropomorphize little critters like this. I've never identified with a fly before...but now I have. Hey, put that fly swatter away will you! Neat piece Chip.

Excellent photo with a secretive feeling; likely he thinks he's well hidden, but that bright red eyeshadow gives him away! Great find!

Indeed, this breed of fly is very handsome to behold. It's a shame they don't understand that. There eyes are not very adept to such abstract things. And of course next to no brain to process it. I say that in full knowledge that this fly is likely more self aware than the most advanced computer humans have ever contrived. Terrific the colours here. I love green and the subtle shades of the leaves is neatly complemented by the vibrant spectral display of the flies abdomen. Oh yeah, and then there are those eyes....

Beautiful capture, Dear Chip! The textures and detail are nothing less than perfect! I love looking at this, and wish I myself, could study something like this. The colours on this critter are astounding.. how naturally beautiful. An interesting testimony about it as well, and it's true... we always look for complexity, and yet studying the here and now always seems of second priority. Fascinating concept, as always, my Friend!
