Description

For all you gardeners out there, this rose hip is not unusual. For years I've wondered where these come from. Just the other day we walked by hundreds of these on several gigantic rose bushes. Now I know:) Bill Note: The rose hip, also known as rose haw or rose hep, is the fruit of the rose plant, that typically is red-to-orange, but ranges from dark purple to black in some species. Rose hips begin to form after successful pollination of flowers in spring or early summer, and ripen in late summer through autumn.

I just saw Tara's view of this same fruit. I saw a few, earlier this week, but unfortunately, I only got rose-hip-shaped blurs as it was a breezy day and rose hips aren't as HUGE as photographs make them look, and so the wind does move them in ways that are not good for cameras! Oh well...at least you got this beauty! I love the sheen. The vibrant red. I also love those odd, somewhat squiddish tentacles that aren't really tentacles, but in my mind they are, because tentacles usually belong to cute things, like squids. I'm weird like that!

Beautiful photo, Bill. I've seen a lot of these in Sweden. These are dried and turned into powder which is sold in food stores - just add hot water and you have rose-hip soup or rose-hip tea, depending on the amount of water added. Tastes very good and is rich in vitamins and other good things. It's become even more popular after a research report some years ago claimed they contain a chemical which slows arthritis and helps relieve the pain from arthritis. Keep up the good work! :-) Now for some rose-hip tea!

You and Tara, are both on the same wavelength ;) speaking of Rosehips here - as I had mentioned to her, it's my most favourite cup of tea is 'Rosehip tea' - very delicious taken with a spoonful of honey ... ... and a celebration of the shiny fruit you are showing us here, did you ever open one up? be very careful! - the fine little hairs around the seeds are very itchy! I remember them distinctly, when I went to school and the boys in my class used to put these down the back of our clothes, near the neck (does that sound right?) - Yikes, no fun but always followed by a lot of laughter ... BB welcome back, don't worry too much about being absent from Rendo, I am pretty much of an 'Irregular' myself.

And the rose hip is high in vitamin C! The flesh of three such hips has as much or more than a whole orange.
