Description

The Westland Whirlwind...a quirky and anorexic looking fighter developed during the 1930's was mostly famous for "intruding" on the famous "Channel Dash" of the German battleships Gneisenau and Scharnhorst. Four Whirlwinds on destroyer escort spotted the German warships through a heavy cloud layer and were summarily pounced on by 20 BF-109's performing the same duty for the German ships. The original flight of four was reinforced by 4 additional Whirlwinds. In the end only four returned from the hopeless encounter. At the time of its design, the Whirlwind was the fastest and most heavily armed RAF fighter ...small and very fast. It's engine design problems, the limits imposed by its high landing speeds, and a limited range of about 300 miles contributed to its very short production run. 15 minutes of fame was all it got. Westland Whirlwind: Beautiful model that captures the Whirlwind's anorexia and sleek mosquito like character free on sharecg by Neiwil. Poser 8, vue6infinite, a soupcon of PS CS3

You always bring out the best in any model, this is stunning and the 'potted' history is informative and fittingly short for so, saddly, short a moment of glory......had but a few spare Merlins been available, who knows what might have been!!!! Thanks for the mention mate, always appreciated...

Nice work on these Bill. They look like insects buzzing forward for the sting. Due to the wing size and huge engines the fuselage does look a bit undernourished lol.

Yep, sad really.. They never thought of strapping a couple of Merlins to it.. Wonder what would have happened then...? Only two Squadrons were equipped with them, for a fairly short time.. They found the short period of glory ass intruders.. There high speed at low altitude made them almost uncatchable, and they could carry a couple of 250 pound bombs as well.. But as you say, the engine was their undoing and they were replaced by other aircraft.. Great work as you always produce.. :-) Hope you didn't mind me giving folks a potted History lol Rob
