Description

This was another installation by the artist Ai WeiWei exhibited in the fountain court of Somerset House, 2011. The 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac are represented here as bronze heads, and are recreations of sculptures which were looted by British and French troops in 1860 from the fountain of Yaunming Yaun (an imperial retreat in Beijing) during the Second Opium War. Against the backdrop of Somerset House I felt this was a great site to exhibit these sculptures - they were certainly impressive to look at.
