Description
Durbar Square is the generic name used to describe plazas opposite old royal palaces in Nepal. Before the unification, Nepal consisted of small kingdoms, and Durbar Squares are the most prominent remnants of these old kingdoms. The oldest temples in the square are similar to pagodas and built in a typical Newari architectural style.
The Newars are the indigenous people of Nepal's Kathmandu Valley. The valley and surrounding territory have been known from ancient times as Nepal Mandala(Newar Circle).
The image on the left shows the various styles of buildings found in Durbar Square. The image on the right is an example of the practicality of the Nepalese. Ancient buildings have been repurposed to be used as tourist shops.

There is so much to see and discover - it suggests such rich cultures and wealth, while quite often the opposite is true, if I think of all those begging children ... It's a stark contrast between the rich and the poor, incomprehensible at times. Thanks for sharing your experiences, Mark BB
