Description
The Nepalese unit of currency is the Rupee which consists of 100 Paisa. While I was in Kathmandu the government raised the price of milk by thirty Paisa, or about three cents per gallon. There was a near riot in Durbar Square. The army was called out to maintain order. They carried wooden sticks and bamboo shields. Exhibiting my usual bravery, I stood well back in the crowd with a clear route of escape behind me.
No one was hurt that day. After all, when you beat the locals and arrest them it tends to be bad for tourism. Days later the government cancelled the increase.

Reminds me of a time when I was stationed in Japan. My first time off base and outside of the USAF main gate came some protester. Chanting their drums and waving their signs. Then the riot police came from behind me. Caught in between and didn't know what or why this was happening. I backed off on the side. I hear you about bravery as I did the same :) Excitement that we will never forget. Glad you got pictures. Aloha

How the pictures are similar worldwide. Then, as now. While enriching individual, are the simple people - with the threat of violence - suppressed. I love those authentic pictures. Thanks for sharing!
