Description
China occupied Tibet in 1950. A 1959 revolt was brutally suppressed and between 200,000 and 1,000,000 Tibetans died. The Dali Lama fled to India. Some 500,000 Tibetans have followed him into exile since then. While most live in India, there is a substantial population of Tibetans in Nepal. They tend to be among the poorest members of the society. This girl was probably wearing every piece of clothing she owned.

Great portrait....(my protective instinct is aroused)

My bucket list has always included a stay in Nepal. The people I've seen in photos and documentaries look like the most open and innocent of humans. For the "hair issues," teeth issues, bad matching clothing, they seem to be so determined to live life in their own custom and with pride. This child is an amazing human.

I suppose she'd be 40-something by now? I wonder if she remembers those days ...

She has a veneer of toughness. Let's hope she made it to adulthood.
