Description
I imagine that like most things that we are suited to and that we consequently enjoy...the endeavors during which we truly feel at home, U-boats men during the war were no different. Take away the conflict, the necessity to use the craft as a weapon, and no foreseeable threats, and it's all about sailing on the open sea.
The craft is the Type XXIII "Elektroboot". There were only six of this type of craft fabricated and none of the six were sunk by allied forces. Small and fast, they were designed to operate mostly in coastal, shallower waters, and when submerged, could operate silently being powered by batteries or with noisier diesel power using the snorkel for an air supply. On the surface they were powered by conventional diesel engines that were also used to charge the batteries. Limited range because of enormous fuel consumption kept their production low. (Interesting to note, the type XXIII was so small that it only carried two torpedoes and those had to be loaded externally!)

Crew: Epici Enemy LWR01 as a base and then everything cobbled from bits and pieces.

I like the way that the foam and the clouds balance each other around the dark mass of the submarine. Excellent work on the details too... That's the last time they eat fish and chips while shadowing a convoy I bet ;-)

"Look Hanns, that seagull looks like a Shorts Sunderland!....oh sh%$...DIVE,DIVE.." :-) Bloody marvelous image Bill, you are really making these seascapes a specialist subject...outstanding work. I watched the Directors cut of Das Boot the other night so a timely post...I've read a fare bit about the Type XXIII, one of those great advances that was a giant leap backwards. However had they had time to refine it....who knows? I seem to recall they found one of these about 5 years ago, not sure if they managed to raise it or just 'salvaged' it.
