Brad Pitt and I share the exact same birthday (month, day, year) outside of that, our stories diverge considerably. Mr. Pitt went on to become an internationally famous superstar, while I have led the much more interesting life of the starving artist. I come from a long line of storytellers (whose gift for gab stretches back through the mists of time to our native Ireland) and professional malcontents who were seemingly born to create something in the arts, be it music, writing, sculpture, painting, or photography. I started writing at age 12 with a screenplay with my cousin Ryan about a planet where everyone looked like Elton John entitled "Don't I Know You?" More screenplays followed, several of which received epic Super-8 production with budgets that sometimes ran up to $10. A few even had sound!  More writing followed: songs, poems, short stories, numerous unfinished novels, etc.. Somewhere in there was an attempt at being a rock star...
Still living at home, at age 22, my father dropped an elderly Nikromatt 35-mm film camera into my lap, in the hopes that I would "make a go of it" as a photojournalist. That didn't happen, but I did develop an abiding love of photography that along with writing and archival work have been among the chief passions of my life. When it comes to my photography, I try to be as creative as possible while at the same time striving for a documentary/archival quality. The only set rules I adhere to, when it comes to making pictures are: 1.) Try not to make the picture blurry, and 2.) Don't drop the camera.

Holey glass-guard, Batman! This is one of those typical Chicago shots that I love. For as old and decrepit as the CTA just so happens to be, these cheap-functional-almost pretty thingies give the CTA a borderline-modern look. I love the byplay of light and the streak of red. Quite nice. Of course after seeing this and reading the quote, I also found myself thinking of the Yellow Submarine when Ringo (I think) carried a hole around in his pocket. Literally. It was a rather floppy hole that came in handy when our intrepid musical-heroes had to escape from some animated menace. He simply took the hole out and everyone went through it. That's pretty much the only bit of that extended fever-dream of a cartoon I remember, and I wonder if one of these glass-blocked holes might fit in one's pocket. Great perspective too. These things look surprisingly good when they're backlit as well. Great shot.

As these two officials took their places, Dorothy asked: "Why is the colander the High Priest?" "He's the holiest thing we have in the kingdom," replied King Kleaver. "Except me," said a sieve. "I'm the whole thing when it comes to holes." . . . L Frank Baum, The Emerald City of Oz Libraries in the head, as well. Rocks too, most likely. :P LOVE the shot!!

"...they had to count them all. Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall. Oh, the memories. I came upon a comment of yours at Chipka's gallery and its extra depth and vitality inspired me to have a look at your gallery. Glad I did. I don't know why, but I've never tried my hand at photography. Perhaps it's time I did, if I can afford a decent camera. And, for a dog as old as I, learning new tricks is quite a challenge.
