Description
The West India Docks are located in Canary Wharf and were opened in 1802. Its purpose was to unload all West India produce brought into the Port, while all exports to the West Indies were to be loaded. Its construction was mainly due to the wealthy merchant and shipowner, Robert Milligan, who objected to the inefficiency and theft which blighted the trade scene in London during this period.
This pano was taken on a foot bridge which spans the dock. The building on the left is a Marriott Hotel . Also shown are quayside cranes - remnants of the docks purpose. The HSBC Tower and the top of One Canada Square Skyscrapers are shown.
This place for me sums up 'Cityscape', reflecting the current modernisation of London. Close to where this pano was taken is the Museum of London Docklands which presents the history of the River Thames/Docks/maritime. A visit is highly recommended!!
