Description
Shelf fungi (sometimes called Bracket fungi) characteristically produce shelf or bracket shaped fruiting bodies called conks. They are mainly found on trees (living and dead) and coarse woody debris, and may resemble mushrooms. Some form annual fruiting bodies while others are perennial and grow larger year after year. Bracket fungi are typically tough and sturdy and produce their spores, called basidiospores, within the pores that typically make up the undersurface (note the lighter color). In New Hampshire, they tend to grow on the north side of the trees where there is little or no sunlight. These two grew close enough together so that I could catch a top and underneath POV with one photo. Zoom helps a bit.

I have quite a lot more catching up to do than I anticipated earlier, but this is a great place to start. I can't resist a good fungus (as long as I'm not its source of nutrients or physical residence) and why resist shelf fungi like these. I love the details in this shot and the wonder of the textures. I love the visible underside of the upper growth. It looks as if it might glow in the night, serving as something of a beacon for incoming insects or other shelf-fungus dwellers. This is quite a nice photo.

Super clear pic, Dana. We have a type here that looks similar and got the name Razorstrop fungus because it is so tough men could sharpen their cut throat blades on them ! They also make great fire lighters.
