Description

Beseno Castle (Castel Beseno in Italian or Pisein in German)is the most powerful fortified castle in the region of Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tirol. It is located in the territory of the municipality of Besenello, not far from the river Adige, in the Italian-speaking province of Trent (Trento in Italian). It is built on a very steep hill, overhanging over the Cavallo River. Probably built on a more ancient hill-fort, it controls both all the Lagarina Valley and the access to the valley leading to Folgaria and the Highlands between Trento and the Veneto region. It first appears in written documents in the 12th century, as a fortress in the fief belonging to the Earls of Appiano, but ruled by their vassals, the Da Beseno family (hence the name). In the 13th century it passes under the control of the Bishop-Count of Trent, and the Da Beseno family with it. Until it is lost by the da Beseno and conquered by an important war lord and leader of a mercenary army, Guglielmo II of Castelbarco, who restored much of the castle.Like all medieval castles, it had a predominantly defensive function; this is shown not only by its strategic position, which renders the castle inaccessible and allowed extensive territorial control from above, but also by its massive walls. The current Renaissance look of the fortress is characterized by the three powerful bastion useful for employment of firearms, dates back to the 16th century. Now the castle is a museum and hosts cultural manifestations and historical memories. The photo was taken from the Trento-Rovereto highway. Thanks for your kind comments.
