Description

A panoramic view of Beseno Castle from Beseno village. Many historical battles, from the wars between Trento factions with the Verona lords in the 12th and 13th centuries to the battle of 1487 between Trentino troops and the Venetians, as well as the armed battles between the Napoleon's French army and the Austrians, took place under this fortress. In 1973 the Trapp counts donated Castel Beseno to the Autonomous Province of Trento which carried out extensive re-construction works. The most important battle was that of Calliano, fought on August 10, 1487, between the Republic of Venice's troops and those of the Bishop-count of Trento, allied with the Counts of Tirol and the Austrian emperor. The Castle marks the border between the Venetian lands and those linked to the Austrian emperors, and it was fought to control the Lagarina Valley and the Adige river.Even if led by Roberto Sanseverino d'Aragona, a mercenary captain of fortune belonging to the Sforza of Milan, the Venetians lost against the Landsknechte, predominantly German mercenary pikemen and supporting foot soldiers, whose regiments were used here for the first time.Roberto Sanseverino, wounded and heavy with his armour, drowned in the Adige. At the end of the 18th century, during Napoleon's Campaign of Italy, Beseno Castle was sieged by the French, but it resisted for many days, until the Austrian troops came to help the besieged Trento soldiers, and won. The castle has an elliptic shape and covers all the hill top; it is 250 metres long and 50 metres wide. Unfortunately we were in a hurry and we couldn't visit it. Next time, I hope. Thanks for your kind comments.

I'm glad to see that the Czechs weren't the only ones to build really HUGE things and then say: "Oh, that's a castle." This one, unlike those Czech things, actually looks like a castle, and it's quite impressive. I love the way in which parts of it seemed sloped and almost organic; it's like they molded rather than set in brick/stone and mortar. Such places are endlessly fascinating, and somewhat more appealing when they smell like history (History smells like mold, and wood-polish, in case you were wondering.) And I can say from this photo and the information you provided, I must visit this place!

An impressive panorama of an impressive fortress. I imagine the peasents looking up over the centuries and wondering about life within its walls.
