Description

This is a 1902 Garr Scott traction engine. Garr Scott and Company, established in 1835, in Richmond, Indiana, manufactured a long line of tractors, threshing machines and steam engines from 1842 through 1911. This enormous cast iron and steel tractor, weighing some 5 tons empty, was used mostly as a stationary portable steam flywheel for threshing wheat and other agricultural purposes. The 10 horsepower traction engine with a single cylinder Class F engine powered everything. The term traction engineâ was later shortened to tractor. To operate the engine and tractor, the boiler was fired with either coal or wood that stoked in the firebox at the rear of the machine. The firebox heated water, in the reservoir above, produced steam pressure that powered a flywheel (on the other side) and the tractor itself. Pulleys connected to the flywheel of the tractor, could run a thresher machine up to fifty feet away. It took a tractor crew, pulley crew, a horse drawn team to continuously supply water to the tractor and a second horse drawn team to keep up with supplying the tractor with wood and or coal. It does not sound very efficient but it worked. All info from a nearby sign. Zoom works. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana
