Description
The "Star Runner" was one of the last big ships assembled before the Rephi Portals opened up the stars. By that time portals were in use across much of the solar system, and an ambitious project had launched for the Alpha Centauri system. "Star Runner" was built shortly before the portal reached its destination, and it was intended to run people to and from the newly opened bases, ferrying the researchers and later on settlers as the exploration continued. The ship wasn't quite as successful as its builders had hoped, and ended up sitting for a very long time unused in orbit around Saturn.
Eventually someone did pick the ship up and get it operational again, and it served a useful life in the Centauri system moving people and equipment about during the pre-war years. It was never glamorous nor did it participate in any great exciting missions, but it served a need, and eventually was scrapped for materials as the need for newer ships continued.
Perhaps not the stuff of a great novel, but at least it wasn't a total failure, either.

Another ship modeled and rendered in Bryce, using a mixture of my own textures and some presets for the framework elements.
The planet was made from the combined rendering of 4 different planets, and some judicious use of Photoshop as well.
Compositing, post work adjustments, the "wear and tear" on the ship's hull, as well as the starfield and nebula all done in Photoshop as well.
