Description
As mentioned in one of my F-in-L posts, Karens Dad has never set foot off British soil apart from his Military service at the end of WWII.As a result he has been motoring around Wales since 1950 when there where fewer 'roads' and even fewer cars.As roads and bye-passes appeared, Peter stuck to the roads he knew and since she was born, Karen has been along for the ride.Peters knowledge of Welsh 'back roads' is amazing but what really gets me is what Karen remembers....so the point? We went out one day last week to Dolgellau, this can involve a drive down to Porthmadog and then inland to Dolgellau. As we left Beddgelert Karen suddenly uttered 5 words that fill me with dread, "if you turn left here".As usual I found myself driving up a 'mountain' on a very twisty road with hedgerow on either side slapping the wing mirrors. What caused me the most discomfort was a road sign warning of 'School Bus', oh how I'd like to meet that coming the other way.Needless to say we made it in one piece (we always do) and half way along our 'short cut' we came across this.We pulled over and had a walk around for half an hour.If I'd stayed on the main road I could've averaged 60mph, here I was doing 0mph, it took a bit longer in the end but on reflection it was worth it....

This is a beautiful landscape Neil - testament to the effort sometimes needed to find "The Shot" (and of course that little local knowledge!) Can you slip in the camera (and photo tech) details too as I am curious!

What a lovely story...

My, Neil. Quite a small adventure, but it's because all the others zip past at 60 mph that places like this are unspoiled and unknown. (I can just see this converted to a tourist trap - not a tree left, petrol stations, hotels, restaurants, etc., etc., etc... Fortunately this hasn't happened here!) And, sheltered between the hills, no breeze, resulting in a perfect mirror. Nature's pristine beauty untouched by greedy human hands. Amazing such can still be found in the western world. Your wife sure had a good idea here. And you had great luck with the weather, too. Keep up the good work! :-)

This is the problem of driving today in a country filled with modern road networks...you miss the adventure of motoring and sights like this. Sure it may take a little longer to get somewhere but unless it's an important appointment what's the hurry? I'm also guessing the car Peter used to drive was a lot more interesting than the one's we have today :) Fantatsic shot mate... more of these holiday adventures if you have them!

What a beautiful looking place Mate! An outstanding place to take a break... So many Veterans have never stepped of shores, aside from their service.. You write a fine notation to go with this stunner of a picture.. Outstanding! Rob

"Upon reflection...?" No pun intended, I expect. Heh! Wonderful capture of a beautiful spot. Loved your story about it too. Reminded me of a short-cut my family took outside Rapid City, South Dakota, when I was a teenager back in the early 1950s. The sign said "Beautiful Skyline Drive." Well, I guess it was beautiful, but they didn't mention terrifying! We weren't sure there would be a drive shaft, transmission, oil pan, or tires left before we got to the end of the drive. Happily, we were still in one piece, albeit, a bit shaken. Heh.
