Description

More from the Montezuma Castle National Monument. Here's what the nearby interpretive sign says: Here's another "castle" -- this one called "A" by the archeologists who excavated it in the 1930s. Like neighboring Montezuma Castle, Castle A was occupied by Sinagua farmers between A.D. 1200 and 1450. However, with 45 rooms and an estimated occupancy of 100, it was much larger. It's not nearly as well preserved, because sometime before the Sinaguas' mysterious disappearance in the late 1400s a fire destroyed almost all interior features. All you can see today are parts of a few collapsed walls and a partially reconstructed foundation.

The damage is quite extensive. Compared to Montezuma this looks like the poorer neighborhood on the other side of the tracks. A fascinating place.

Fascinating stuff! I love the remains of the bricks/stone walls...I'll bet it was lovely when it was occupied and in full usage!

An excellent shot, Tara, and very fascinating information as well. It must be extremely awe-inspiring to visit these places - hopefully someday I'll get the chance as well.

Nicely done Hon. I've often heard people say that they live in a hole-in-the-wall...this must be where that saying originated:) Reminds me a bit of this: by Pink Floyd! How about that?

This is really super-marvelous! It's even better because I'm reading Ursula K. LeGuin's wonderfully complicated, beautifully fun, and occaionally-hilarious novel: Always Coming Home and I can see the Kesh people living here, doing the sorts of things that the Kesh people are really good at going...ah, but that's because the Kesh are largely based on the Native American cultures living along the Pacific Coast, especially in Oregon and Northern California...which is totally different than this marvel you've photographed. When you were there, did you hear any interesting stories about Coyote? She was always doing something interesting...once, she even got a volcano to erupt, but that didn't really accomplish what she thought was going to happen, and so she just said: "I'm leaving." And she walked right into another story, because, apparently, that's what Coyotes do. I really have no idea where that all came from, except for the fact that I find it odd that there'd be a "Castle" there, especially when it's obvious that it was something else and it was probably full of all sorts of interesting stories about Coyote or Condor, or even the ants who decided to start a war with humans...apparently they're still at it. This is a gorgeous photo. I love it! I wonder what stories live in here. I'm sure there are some interesting ones between the building stones.
