Description

Following Grumman's heritage of stubby fat bodied fighters, the FF-1,F2,and F3, the F4F Wildcat is probably the most remembered for it's reputation and exploits. Without the upper wing of its predecessors I had never considered the lineage, but there it is, that pudgy body and exposed retractable gear. I also did not know that it was sold in significant numbers to the British Royal Navy's air arm among other air forces. In the FAA it was nicknamed "Martlet". Even though it was fast, and very maneuverable due to its weight distribution, it was outclassed in speed, maneuverability, and range by it's main adversary, the Mitsubishi Zero. That little deficiency didn't stop it from having a very impressive loss/kill ratio because of its tactics. A clever maneuver conceived by a naval aviator stationed in San Diego, John Thach. It was known a the "Post Beam Position" or "Dutch Rudder", better know after pop, the "Thach Weave" (Very interesting reading!). It definitely helped to even the odds. Of course, I remember it best from all those old 40's movies and newsreels that I watched as a kid. This particular effort was centered around how to make some convincing Pacific theater island groups and shoreline effects in Vue. F4F Wildcat" Digimation, here on Rendo. Naval Aviators: Epici Low Poly LW0R1 Enemy Soldier donning adh3d brand flight gear as per the quartermaster's usual practice. Great job! Aside from the lack of weathering on the Wildcats, it's all very convincing.
