Description

Next stop on our trip through the Southwest was Arches National Park. It is another very large park (over 75,000 acres) & contains over 2,000 natural sandstone arches as well as many other dramatic rock formations, some of which can be seen here. We had stayed in Moab the previous night & decided to get up early to catch at least some of Arches in the early morning light. We drove out of town & part of the way into the park & stopped to take our first photos here. I was puzzled that my camera display told me that it was using the built in ram & only had 16 photos left. After a moment of panic, it dawned on me that I had taken my memory card out the previous night to review the previous day's photos on my tablet & had forgotten to put it back in the camera (I know, I should always carry a spare card). I was really bummed at the thought of having to go all the way back into town & missing a chunk of the morning. Then it occurred to me that there was a possibility the park visitor center might have a card for sale, so we headed back for there. Luckily, it turned out they did. Though it was only a 2 GB card, it got me through the day & our lost time was minimized. All's well that ends well... Please zoom

Glad you found an extra card; I have a bunch of them now, and invested in a really big and fast one that holds around 800 large RAW files, so hopefully I won't find myself in that position ever again myself! This is such an absolutely beautiful scene; I've been in the desert in the early morning a lot, and I can almost smell that desert smell and hear the little noises of the birds and the wind in the scrub...fantastic capture!

That's gorgeous. Somebody should film a western there.

UVDan - There have been several westerns filmed at Arches, as well as scif-fi & other movies. The National Park service has a list of films made in National Parks here, though unfortunately it only goes up to 1994. It would be nice to see this list updated, but I'm guessing that with budget constraints, it's not a high priority.

A spectacular capture of the beginning of Arches, the "three kings" and the "ram". Excellent natural colors out there!
