Description

Way back in the Jurassic period I was in the habit of wandering the neighborhoods of Los Angeles with my camera. One evening I stumbled across the Silver Lake Reservoir. Surrounded by low hills, it was opened in 1906 to supply water to downtown Los Angeles just a few miles to the east. Over the years a wonderfully eclectic community grew around the lake. A number of Hollywood's early stars built homes here and many of the anitque houses still remain. This is a look at one side of the lake shot through a chain link fence.

It does look rather like a swish sort of area for the 'Rich and Famous' - so let's see some more through your hole in the fence, please - (me, Shallow Hal? don't think so!) ;) but I do like Art Deco/Art Nouveau style architecture Mr. Fossil ... It also looks like a nice long Promenade to watch the stars come out by night! BB

This has a mood, to my mind, of a "have not" peering through the fence at the "haves." An excellent shot with its own story!

Whenever I take pictures through something, I feel like a voyeur. So how I feel here. And what I see, I like it.

A look into another world, shaped by a chain link fence and the night. I was interested to read of the eclectic makeup of the neighborhood. When I moved to New Jersey as a child and on visits back to Louisiana, I was struck by one general difference in the neighborhoods, especially the suburbs. In New Jersey, they were a lot more homogenous. Houses of a few basic designs repeated with very little variation of style or age. In Louisiana, I was much more likely to see an old decrepit house next to a new one, or a mansion next to a very unassuming home. This is less true now than it was 40 years ago. I like neighborhoods where the past rubs shoulders with the present, where one house looks very different from the next. Nice shot. I like the soft pink glow on the horizon and the lengthening of the reflected lights in the water.
