Description

For those of you with little or no interest in aviation, I hope you'll enjoy the composition and light and whatever else about this strikes your fancy. You need read no further. For Rob and Neil and the rest of you aviation nuts, I'm presenting a challenge. I hope it's a really difficult challenge, because I've got more hints waiting in the wings! (So to speak.) Here's the challenge: Do you know what this is? (The honeycomb-looking part. I don't care that you can identify an exhaust manifold.) If you can figure out what it is, do you know under what circumstances it would be used? And if you can figure that out, the ultimate question: Do you know what kind of plane this is? :D It's because I love you that I do this. Muuwaahaahaahaahaaaaaa!!!

I've no idea what this is, but I'm sure that when I check back in a day or two, I will learn. This is the cool part of Renderosity, it's always a learning experience. Very cool capture Tara love your challenges here on this one

I'm certainly no aviation nut and I methinks it must be some real old warplane ;D but speaking of honeycomb - it could be, that there are some part-time beekeepers in this squadron - Muuwaahaahaa! BB

Tara, I am no expert, but is it some type of filter. Also, nice shot.

I know nothing about planes except I am scared of heights and never flown in one... I'm like EJD64 maybe it is some type of filter of some sort I am blank on this one....... Hugs Susan~

Looks like a filter to me, probably Tropical / Desert so a plane that flew in the Pacific or North Africa......well that narrows it down.....the REALLY annoying thing is 'I've seen this before'...not 'your' picture, but 'a' picture or maybe the plane.....Knowing you, I'm tempted to say a Spitfire, but I'm not 100% happy with the manifold for that......hmmmmmmm!

I'm guessing that the honeycomb is some sore of altimeter. As for the aircraft, it looks like an old WWII P-40.

Bf-109, judging by the location of the exhaust stack

I have no clue what this is, but in my world, it's a literal honeycomb assembly, intended for the storage of nourishing honey to be used by the hordes bees hired to flap their busy little wings to keep the plane airborne. There are more of these structures all around the plane because a lot of hungry bees are required to keep a plane (and its cargo and its crew and its passengers) aloft. In the other world, the one commonly accepted as the real world...it's...um...it's...a thing. I'd like to see macros of it! I suspect it serves one of those filtration purposes, or maybe it's an intake for something designed to...um...do stuff. Or maybe it's the protective covering over something that (at least "functionally" needs exposure to open air, but not the sort of gunk that comes with open air in the middle of a dogfight. Whatever it is, I find it visually appealing and inspirational in that it could also be one of those Nemaean CO2/O2 exchange cyclers (though they're normally darker, just because Nemaeans like dark-colored stuff.) I love this shot. I also suspect this is near the engine guts of the plane in question. Of course, knowing reality, it could just be the covering of a light. I love this shot.

Well it's a darn good life And it's kinda funny How the Lord made the bee And the bee made the honey And the honeybee lookin' for a home And they called it honeycomb And they roamed the world and they gathered all Of the honeycomb into one sweet ball And the honeycomb from a million trips Made my baby's lips ~Honeycomb, Jimmy Rodgers This and the bee kind are the only honeycombs I know but I will be very interested in finding out what this is.

This really looks like a wasp trap, so I'm going to say this is probably a Mosquito bomber 'cause those mosquitoes never did get along with the wasps. If it's not that then it is obviously a death ray gun.

Ooh, you're evil...but what a lovely capture! Yes, the light, the colours, the textures (great rust!). I have no idea what kind of plane, but to me it looks like that bit is a radio speaker. So there!

For those who say it's a filter ... you are correct! None of the comments posted above have correctly identified the plane. Another clue will be forthcoming!

Yeah, by flying really fast you could catch a bee swarm and make a mix of bees and honey in this and it comes out like bee juice with a taste of honey? ;-D Yuck I am disgusting :) Beautiful shot, Tara :)

Well..... In filtering through the massive amount of information festering away in the 6 remaining brain cells I have, I'll have to agree it some type of filter. Other than filtering things out of the air, I'm not sure what its function is. :-) What kind of airplane....hmmmmmmm.......... I'll go out on a limb and say one with wings... :-) Now that I have that out of the way, I really do love the golden tones and lovely texture you've captured here, Tara! I'll be looking forward to more hints!

Is it an Il-2 Sturmovik? I'd say that filter is probably to do with oil cooling as a possible reason for having it...
