Description

A Marchetti-Savoia SM.79 "Sparviero" escorted by a pair of Macchi MC.205 "Veltro" fighters flies over the desert expanses of the North African theater. Other than an opportunity to make use of a couple of very nicely done models of unusual and often unsung Italian aircraft, my main impetus in doing this piece was after looking at some google maps and realizing just how large an expanse of virtually "nothing" these desert arenas are! Astounding to see hundreds of miles of basically flat, barren, terrain. That's where these flyers wound up...dust and heat, scorpions and snakes...better than being assigned an armor or infantry division! They must have wondered at all the fuss over a lot of sand and dust. These Italian planes were often closer to racing planes of the era, and in more lively livery, garnered a number of speed records in their heyday. The SM.79, graced officially with the name "Sparviero", or "Sparrowhawk" received the moniker "Il Gobbo Maledetto", "the Damned Hunchback" from its crews (for the obvious reason..."hump, what hump?") who incidentally enjoyed the hunchback's great flying characteristics. The Macchi "Veltro" translates to "Greyhound" with a svelte racer feel to it's shape. A bit of look-see at these planes attests to the elegance of Italian car design as well. I'll definitely find more uses for these two birds. Savoia-Marchetti M.79 "Sparviero" or "Il Gobbo" if you prefer: Wonderfully executed model by Pedro Caparros, offered free on sharecg. Thank you very much, Pedro. If you haven't already, check this one out. (re-texture tweak and diff props by me) Macchi MC.205 "Veltro": Another oldie but still terrific model by Neiwil, free on share as well. Thanks Neil, thought we forgot about these oldies, didn't you? Nope. Pilots and crew: culled from Neil's models. Poser7, Vue6Infinite, PS Cs3

I have a hard time getting excited about any of the Italian weapons systems from WWII, or their army, but this looks pretty businesslike.... well done, as usual, bud!

Damned fine image Bill, yes, I think first order of business out there was fuel capacity....and a good sense of direction. Nice thing about such a featureless terrain is you are drawn straight to the 'point'..aircraft.I really like Pedro's models, this one's a fave as it pairs well with that old Veltro...thanks for giving that a 'run out', definitely the best looking Italian fighter.. Thanks for the mention bud, always appreciated.

Very cool image Bill and you've done a great job with both these fine models. Italian Aircraft and equipment often seems to get overlooked even though they had some very good designs. That said my favourite has always been the Fiat CR.42 Falco.

Thanks Bill. It is a joy to see how you use my model with remarkable art. The "Sparviero" is very well accompanied by "Veltro" by Neil. As a curiosity, say that at the beginning of its use in the Spanish Civil War had no fighter escort because they were faster than any fighter biplane of the time. You've done a great picture as usual. I appreciate the mention.
